Watch: What the DOW-UAP-PR116 Case File Actually Shows

Video - DOW-UAP-PR116, Unresolved UAP Report, Atlantic Ocean, 2020

A bizarre, balloon-shaped object caught on military infrared cameras has remained officially unexplained years after it was spotted over the Atlantic Ocean — despite a Navy officer describing it as resembling a giant, deformed balloon.

The Pentagon has released a chilling 32-second clip showing a strange, dark object drifting through the skies above the Atlantic.

The grainy infrared footage has become one of the standout cases in the US military’s latest release of UFO files, with the mysterious object earning comparisons to a ghost and even a sci-fi probe droid.

But while the footage may look like something straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster, the official explanation remains frustratingly elusive.

The case, listed as DOW-UAP-PR116, was submitted by US Northern Command to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the Pentagon body responsible for investigating unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs.

And despite years passing since the encounter, officials have yet to formally identify the object.

Strange ‘Ghost’ Drifts Across the Atlantic

The 32-second clip shows a dark, vertically elongated object moving slowly across the infrared camera’s field of view.

Its unusual two-tiered shape has sparked speculation among UFO enthusiasts, with some comparing its silhouette to a mysterious floating figure.

Yet the footage also appears to show something far less extraordinary: an object drifting passively with the wind rather than powering through the sky.

There is no obvious sign of high-speed movement, sudden turns or dramatic evasive manoeuvres.

The sighting reportedly dates back to January 2020, although the official record does not provide precise coordinates for where it happened.

The footage was captured using military infrared sensors, meaning viewers are not seeing an ordinary colour recording of the object.

Navy Officer’s Bizarre Encounter

The video is accompanied by a separate Navy report, known as DOW-UAP-D091, which documents an encounter during a military training exercise over the Atlantic.

The officer involved, described as an O-3 weapons systems officer, provided a striking description of the object.

According to the report, it appeared dark maroon or almost purple and was estimated to stand between 12 and 15 feet tall.

Most intriguingly, the witness compared it to “a large, somewhat deformed balloon.”

The object appeared to move with the wind, with no clear indication that it was using its own propulsion.

However, the encounter was brief and the available sensor information limited, preventing the officer from establishing exactly what had been spotted.

Was it an unusual balloon, a drone or something else entirely?

The available evidence has not provided a definitive answer.

Why Has the Pentagon Not Solved the Mystery?

The balloon comparison might sound like a straightforward explanation, particularly given the object’s apparent movement with the wind.

But there is an important distinction between a witness believing something looks like a balloon and investigators officially identifying it as one.

The case remains marked as “unresolved” in the released records.

That does not mean officials believe the object was extraterrestrial. It means the available evidence has not been sufficient to establish a conclusive identification.

More information, such as radar tracking, weather data or additional sensor recordings, could potentially help investigators determine what was passing through the sky that day.

Without that supporting evidence, the object’s precise identity remains uncertain.

UFO Hunters Will Be Watching Closely

The footage has attracted international attention as part of the Pentagon’s wider efforts to release records relating to unexplained aerial sightings.

For UFO enthusiasts, the dark, unusual silhouette is another tantalising piece of evidence in the ongoing debate over what military personnel are encountering in the skies.

For sceptics, however, the object’s apparent balloon-like behaviour offers a more ordinary possibility.

And that is what makes the case so intriguing: the footage looks unusual, the witness’s description suggests a potentially mundane explanation, yet the official file remains open to interpretation.

Until further evidence emerges, the mysterious Atlantic sighting is likely to keep UFO watchers guessing.

One thing is clear: an unidentified object on a military recording is not proof of alien life — but it can still leave investigators searching for answers.
